The PMR446 or PMR radio is a licence-free walkie-talkie which gives you completely free and unlimited communication. Quite literally, the name refers to being able to “talk while walking”, and the device uses radio waves to carry voice messages. Unlike licensed devices, which require their users to pay an annual fee to OFCOM (The UK Office of Communications), the licence-free walkie-talkie only needs to be set to the PMR446 radio channel, providing you with completely free communications. Depending on the model of walkie-talkie, PMR radio offers users between 8 to 16 different channels on the 446Mhz frequency range.
Put simply, this type of device will allow you to communicate with all of your collaborators via walkie-talkies set to the same channel, with a range of up to 5 to 12 kilometres in open space. Its range will vary depending on various factors, such as weather conditions, the town or office building, depending on what you are using it for. With good weather conditions, if you are at height and there are no obstacles, you will be able to hear and be heard perfectly at considerable range, while your range will be reduced in the case of wind or fog, or if you are in a forest or a building with thick walls.
The licence-free walkie-talkie can be used as part of hobbies, such as hiking, hunting, climbing, as well as in working environments, such as construction sites, warehouses, stadiums, restaurants, or for events and security. PMR446 radios are a helpful tool for all different types of work! Even though communication is free, this type of walkie-talkie is nevertheless a professional device which will fulfil working professionals’ communication needs.
